Blade Runner
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to the original 1982 Blade Runner and is set thirty years into the future as the character known as K (played excellently by Ryan Gosling) seeks out and destroys what are known as rogue replicants before they colonize the world. K works for the LAPD as an agent.
During one search for a rogue repilcant known as Sapper Morton, K uncovers a box hidden on this repilcants farm, and in this box K finds the remains of another rogue replicant, a female. It appears that she has had a Cesarean Section which questions whether rogue replicants are sterile or not. K is ordered to destroy all of this evidence and move on eliminating all the other rogue replicants.
But interest arouses agent K and he wants to find out who this female replicant is and where she came from. He discovers that this female replicant was as experiment done by the company, the Wallace Corporation.
K goes to the Wallace Corporation and there the female replicant is discovered through DNA. She has been given the name Rachael and is linked to another Blade Runner, named Rick Deckard (Played by Harrison Ford) who starred in the original 1982 Blade Runner movie. K goes in search of Rick Deckard and Rachael’s child, and with the Wallace Corporation on his trail, he must fight to survive, and in the process discovers who he actually is.
This movie is a must see and is to be appreciated for its stunning visual scenes. It really is cinematic art. I do have to say that I found the plot to be a small bit weak, but never mind, go see this film, it is well worth it.
Classic film review- Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 fantasy fuelled story, which surround’s Dorothy Gale, played by the wonderful Judy Garland and her beloved dog Toto. The story is set in Kansas on Dorothy’s homeland, where she lives with her Aunt and Uncle. Little Toto has be blamed for biting a mean neighbour and Dorothy decides to runaway with Toto before he is taken away. They meet a fortune Teller and he knows they have run off. He tells her to go back home and she does. She and Toto get caught out in a tornado. They rush to her home where the tornado picks up the house and lands in a magical place called Munchkinland.
There are witches there and one, the wicked witch of the East is wanting to get a broom and slippers from the witch of the west and Dorothy is told to put on the red slippers and follow the yellow brick road which will take her and Toto to the Wizard of Oz. The wizard will help them get home.
On their journey they meet a tin man who wants a heart, a cowardly lion who wants courage and a scarecrow who wants a brain so he can think. The witch is out to get them and the red slippers. Dorothy with the help of the wizard and the her new friends defeat the witch.
The Wizard of Oz is a true technicolour classic and is loved by millions. It has lots of memorable scenes and the musical score is beautiful. Over the rainbow is a lovely song and will forever be remembered. The film has characters too that are memorable and will never be forgotten. Movie fans, you will treasure this.
Murder on the Orient Express
A host of well known faces grace the screen in Agatha Christie’s classic story of murder and revenge. Set in 1935 on the world famous Orient Express train, a mysterious murder has taken place and the victim a wealthy American businessman named Ratchet.
The train is stuck on the tracks after an avalanche when the murder takes place and all on broad are suspects. It doesn’t help matters when all of them appear to have something to hide.
Hercules Poirot, the world famous Belgian detective played by Kenneth is on board to solve the crime with his masterful skill and wit.
The movie is stylish, the clothes look really cool and the train itself is very nicely furnished and sets that scene, well the era should I say.
Even though the movie has all these great actors in one place, it came across at times a tad boring.
I mean Kennath Branagh plays Poirot very well and all, oh, and directed it too did I mention, but again it just lacks something in the way of the plot. It’s a tricky one folks. I am not saying that it is not a good film, it is, and you will be entertained, I recommend you go see this movie and make up your own mind, drop an email to let me and others known what you thought of Murder on the Orient Express.
Classic Movie Review – The Birds
The master of horror, Alfred Hitchcock gives us the Birds, a story about what happens when nature attacks humanity. Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) meets Mitch Brennan (Rod Taylor) at a pet shop, where he is looking to purchase lovebirds as a gift for his young sister on her birthday. Mitch recognises Melanie because he had seen her once before, but she has never seen him before. Mitch plays a trick on Melanie and pretends to mistake her as a shop assissant, just to ruffle her feathers. Melanie shows attraction toward Mitch and decides to follow him home to Bodega Bay where he lives. In Bodega Bay, Melanie buys lovebirds for Mitch because in the pet shop there were none. She goes into Mitch’s house and leaves the birds there for him to find. From then on Melanie and Mitch become friendly and Melanie stays and has dinner with the Brennans.
Melanie’s character could be a bad omen because ever since her arrival in Bodega Bay, the birds there have started to behave crazy and out of sorts. She first gets attacked by a seagull while out in a boat to make her way ashore to Bodega Bay and before long ghastly swarms of birds of different kinds attack everything and everyone. There is no escape it seems and no explanation for the weird bird attacks. Melanie, Mitch and his sister drive off looking for refuge, but where it will be found is anyones guess.
Alfred Hitchcock plays on terror, intrigue, fear and panic and the tension is frightening for the audience and characters as we wonder when will the crazed birds strike again in this epidemic of 1963.

Dunkirk
A visually stunning piece. Dunkirk by Christopher Nolan will have you engrossed from the start. The story is one of heroism, war and a fight for survival. British soldiers in world war two are trapped on the French beach of Dunkirk in 1940 and must endure the harsh reality of war as they wait to be rescued. They are hungry, afraid and are attacked by German forces from the land and air.
Dunkirk is haunting and takes you right into the war. Dunkirk is best watched at the Imaxx because the sound effects are so real you will jump from your seat at the movie theatre. If you see this film a second time at the regular screening (as I did) you will notice the sound effects are not as good as the Imaxx. Never the less, you will experience a remarkable historically accurate movie with actors who shine on screen. Belfast born actor Kenneth Branagh as Commander Bolton, Cork actor Cillian Murphy as the shell shocked soldier found in the ocean sitting on the wreckage of a ship that hours before was to take him to England and Dublin actor Barry Keoghan who plays George, the ordinary young man who joins Mark Rylance on board the Moonstone to help ferry the British soldiers out of Dunkirk and back home to England.
The dialogue is very little as the imagery and the cinematography is very strong. The threat of attack is ever present on land and from the air and you will feel as if you are one of these remarkable war heroes.
The tension is unnerving throughout the movie as it takes you out of your comfort zone and onto the cold beaches of Dunkirk. Former band member Harry stiles of One Direction plays a British soldier and does are very convincing job. Fans can be assured, he will grace the screen again in the near future.
The sequences from the air in the spitfire aircraft will bring you right into the pilot seat and gives you an idea of how these pilots operated in such a confined space. The acting from Tom Hardy, one of the spitfire pilots is mostly, if not all done using his eyes. This shows what a fine actor he is, and his skills in Dunkirk have propelled him to even greater success. This movie has to be seen, and if you love war movies, you will love every sequence of Dunkirk, as no part of it is disappointing.
